Mega Colon Problems
There are some terms that you may have never heard of, and one of them could be mega colon. This is a type of colon problem that is normally found in animals, but can be found in humans as well. Pretty much, mega colon is just what is sounds like. It is an enlarged colon. Most of the time, when you have an enlarged colon, you are going to have the lack of movement in the large intestine that you need to have fecal material pass through it. As you can guess, there are some signs that you can look for whenever it comes to mega colon. Later, we are going to talk about some mega colon treatment options that you may want to look into.
First of all, it is important to note that mega colon is something that can come about when anything is blocking the fecal matter from moving through the body of the animal or person. This is going to cause the colon to bloat in certain areas and cause it to become enlarged. As you can guess, the best way to cure this kind of problem is to unclog whatever is blocking the colon to start with. Some signs that you could have, or something could have, mega colon would be abdominal distention or failure to thrive. Sometimes you could have a huge delay in stool or no stool at all, constipation, and diarrhea. The diarrhea, however, is, of course, going to come with a very foul odor. Sometimes you will even have impacted fecal matter that can be seen when looking into the rectum. Other times, you will have very unusually shaped stools.
As we talked about before, the mega colon treatment options can come in many different forms. The first thing that doctors have to do is find out what is causing this back up of fecal matter. Then from there, they have to find ways to get it unstuck. Sometimes the only way to unclog everything is to do surgery to go in and remove it before anymore problems come about. A good way to avoid getting mega colon is not to eat things that you should not eat. Stay away from eating things like coins or things like that, that could bock up your colon. However, even when doing that, sometimes this is something that just happens naturally, as some food does not get digested right.
If you have a cat or a rat that may have mega colon, then you are going to have to keep an eye on that animal. That is because they can not tell you when something is wrong. They could be suffering and you not even know it. If you start to notice that an animal has a bloated stomach, it's a good idea to take them to the vet to have it looked at. Not only that, but you should also take them to the vet if you notice that they are not using the bathroom. These could all be signs of mega colon, and should be looked at right away.
